woman-studentGoing back to school is a big decision, and there’s a lot to consider. To help you get started we've put together this quick checklist of things to think about.

1. Degree or Certificate
What type of training do you need? Your career goals should define this for you, and if you can start your career with a certificate—or non-degree—program, you will often be able to save a lot of time and money.

2. Type of Learning
Do you want to go to school online or on-campus? On-campus programs are what most people typically think of, but online programs are a particularly great fit for military spouses and other adult learners because they offer great schedule and location flexibility.

3. Training Quality
Of course you want to make sure you’re going to a quality school, but you should also consider how your individual program ranks. Will you be getting the biggest bang for your buck?

4. Industry/Employer Opinions
What do employers think of the school and training program? Will they be willing to hire you when you graduate? Make a few phone calls and find out!

5. Cost
Education is one of the biggest expenses in our society, so be an informed consumer and make sure you know what you’ll be paying for. How much will it be—all things considered? And if you’re taking out loans be sure to determine whether you’ll be able to make enough in your new career to pay them back.

6. Certification Exam Preparation
Many careers require certifications or licenses. Will your training prepare you for any required certifications?

7. Help From Instructors
Will you have the help you need to make the most of your training? Whether you’re attending on-campus or online classes make sure you’re aware of what type of instructor help you’ll have access to.

8. Help After Graduation
Does your school offer any help when you’re looking for a job? The job search can be tricky and every little bit helps, so make sure you know if you’ll have any extra resources.

9. Books & Tools
Are textbooks included? If not, how much will they cost? Does your school or program offer access to any other special resources (seminars, references, etc.)?

10. Other Students
Finally, how will you be interacting with other students? Will you be working on lots of group projects or working on your own? Will you be able to find a Study Buddy?

And there we have it! If you’d like a more complete version of this checklist, be sure to check out the complete article on Army Wife Network’s site.
